"you should not have a vicious dog like that"
and people shouldn't say such vicious things
Lady Elly is a 15 month old Staffordshire bull terrier and just like most Staffies has experienced stereotyping behaviour. Having kids protected from her when walking past to people nearly getting themselves rundown to get out of her reach. Read her interview to find out more.
Q) Why did you choose to buy/adopt the breed of your dog ?
A) Having done lots of research between a few breeds, decided that a Staffie was what we wanted. Experience with this breed have always been positive.
Q) Before you had your breed of dog, did you have any of your own stereotypical views towards the breed?
A) No none at all
Q) Have you had people cross the road/ give you a wide berth in order not to pass close to you whilst out walking your dog?
A) Yes walked the opposite way, crossed roads and protected kids if we've passed them.
Q) Have you ever had parents pull their children out of the way/ closer to them when they have seen you coming?
A)Yes on a few occasions pull kids away, 1 nearly got themselves and kid knocked down to get away from us.
Q) What is the most negative thing you have experienced physically/ verbally whilst out walking?
A)Statements like ”you should not have a visious dog like that” or “bet it bites”
Q)Why do you believe people have the stereotypical views that they have towards (your breed of dog)?
A) Press gives the breed a bad name
Q) What would you like to say to people who have pre judged views towards (your breed of dog)?
A) Do not judge what you don't know. Get to know the individual dog. They are so loving, gentle and fun as a breed
Q) What would you say to someone who was considering getting (your breed of dog)?
A) Do your research look at the needs of the breed, enrichment, walking and drive. Does this fit with your family.
Q) Do you feel that dog stereotyping is talked about enough, if not, in what ways can we raise more awareness?
A) I have found over last few years it's talked about more but societal views need to change instead of sweeping statements. Some people’s views will not change no matter what you say. Things like posting on social media, groups of like-minded people spreading the message.
