Creating a Zero waste Patchwork Blanket from Scrap Fabric for Charity: Follow Along on Instagram @roobeardogs

Today, I'm excited to share with you that I have started making a large zero waste patchwork blanket from scrap fabric, which I will cut into smaller blankets and donate to an animal charity. This project aligns perfectly with my passion for eco-friendly practices and a zero-waste values. I'm thrilled to show how leftover materials can be turned into something special that enriches the lives of animals in need.

The Inspiration Behind the Project

Our planet needs love now more than ever, and one of the easiest ways to show it is by repurposing materials instead of discarding them. I started collecting scrap fabric from multiple projects since RooBear Co began in 2020. For example, I gathered leftover pieces from dog bandanas, dog bows and even fabric from my nans sewing projects from many years ago. Every piece of fabric reminds me of a collection that I have created and got to see many pups wearing. A variety of colours, patterns and themes .

I have always loved dogs since I was a little girl and I especially got a deep affection for rescues and rescue centres when I rescued my Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross, Roo. Every year I aim to help a variety of animal charities. This project combines my passion for sewing with my commitment to sustainability. In fact, each small blanket I create will provide warmth and comfort for animals waiting for their forever homes.

The Process of Creating the zero waste scrap fabric Patchwork charity Blanket

Assembling the blanket is truly a labour of love. I sort the fabrics by patterns and colour which helps create a vibrant and cohesive design. I sew 10 individual squares together to create a strip. Each day I aim to create 8 strips and then sew them all together. The process is not only enjoyable but also therapeutic, allowing creativity to flow while making a positive difference.

This patchwork blanket will not only demonstrate the beauty of repurposed materials but will also communicate a vital message about sustainability in our daily lives and highlight a charity that is doing their best to help pups in need.
